How much horsepower in a 1969 VW bug to keep up with a stock 2003 Corvette (Not Z06)?
Jυѕt need tο know һοw much horse power i need tο рυt іח mу bug ѕο i саח shut up tһіѕ douche bag wһο drives һіѕ vette tο school аƖƖ tһе time. Don’t ɡеt mе wrοחɡ, i LOVE corvettes. Mу dad used tο һаνе one, Bυt tһіѕ fool soils tһе ɡοοԁ name οf vette owners everywhere. I figured іf wе raced, аחԁ i gave һіm a ɡοοԁ rυח fοr һіѕ money һе wουƖԁ shut tһе hell up аbουt һοw аmаᴢіחɡ һіѕ car іѕ.
the specs for the stock Vette from 03′ factory made without turbo is 350-400 depending on whether its a V8 or V12…it all depends on the model and what the owner has the factory put in…so i’d say put anywhere between 360-400 horses in it…but you might require a wheelie bar as this much power/torque could cause a flip in such a small car…btw…respect to ya for saying he’s a disgrace….cocky vette owners should not even be allowed to own the cars.
What the heck is up with Kyle W? Talking about turbos and V12 engines in regard to a stock Corvette? Hmmmm…
C5 Corvettes are actually pretty fast cars from the factory. A 350hp LS1 V8 in a 2-door sports car = a pretty fast package stock. But your Beetle is much lighter than a Corvette. If your car is built to handle the extra power and has good race components, you’ll probably only need about 200-250hp to teach him a lesson.
A beetle weighs 1900 pounds. A 2003 corvette weighs somewhere around 3250. So, a beetle would need 205 horsepower to have the same power to weight ratio. But the Vette has better gear ratios and better traction. So it is impossible to say. You may need 250hp and some other upgrades. That would probably let you beat him 0-60, but the faster you go, the more advantage he would have.
Phil.. it simply isn’t going to happen.
1) You can stuff a huge engine into your bug and have a LOT of HP, but you would also have to tear out and replace the drive train because that transaxle is not designed to handle the stresses.
2) Replace the drive train and now you have transferred that stress to the suspension and steering gears (unless you plan to do 1/4 miles which pretty much wastes the VW),
3) Ok.. you also needed to upgrade the frame, right? because you, essentially, just doubled the weight of the car (the full factrory car weighs about 2000 lbs at best.. which includes a 200 lb engine. But you just stuffed in a power plant (engine and tranny) that prob. weigh at least 700 to 800 lbs.. and upped your suspension (and tires too – right?) for at least another 200. So you have added about 50% more weight. – Reinforcement or new frame time.
4) aerodynamics. Take alook at that bug.. Now take a look at the vette.. which one is going to have less wind resistance to over come. You will need to deal with that using spoilers and dams just to keep your powered up bug on the ground and pushing the wind out of the way
So, Phil, in the long run what you need to do is to buy your own vette, strip off the fiberglass and bolt on your vw. shell . He still has you in the wind department but race WITH the wind and you will edge him out.
All that sort of defeats the purpose – right?
But take heart.. a well restored bug is a magnet for the ladies.. so focus on that aspect…

kyle w is a moron, don’t listing to him. a stock c5 corvette is 350 to 370 horsepower. a way to beat him is to put in like a subaru, Volkswagen, or porshe motor in if you have some money. if you don’t you can always go to a junkyard and pick up a 4 cylinder from a ford escort gt because they have richmond engines in them and they put out over 165 horse stock. and btw if you can get the money for the porshe engine, take the whole thing. don’t hookup the stock drive train, you need to replace it no matter what and a porche one will fit great.
Be more realistic, the engine and trans in a VW are not set up to keep you in school, you need the power of a 911 Porsche w/ trans.
Better yet , get the Porsche then hope he has a manuel trans and that his shifting is slow.
Having owned a 69 VW that was a bad year for this maker, supplier and quality.
