It could be anything from a 300hp 350 to a 430hp 427. You need to get somebody to look at it. The differences are obvious and numerous.

At the back of the engine on the drivers side below the cylinder head there will be a casting number (Example 3970010). You may need a flash light to see it and you may need to clean the surface of the area to even tell what it says.

There was a web site that was really good with Chevy engine casting numbers, crank castings, and head castings, but I forgot the name of it. A lot of the other web sites out there were made by f$#%ing idiot writers and not mechanics. They sometimes had head casting numbers as a engine casting number, or they have the right casting number but the wrong info for the engine. The one I’m talking about was really good written by mechanics. Its just to bad I can’t remember the sites name.Theres also a book you can buy that has all of GM engine casting numbers, head castings, crank castings, intake castings, and they have all the right info and tell you if its any good or something to avoid. I had that book but let it to someone and never got it back. To back I can’t remember who I let it to.

Yes thank you. That’s the web site I was thinking. Thanks a lot. Now Id best right it down so i never forget that again.

Go to http://www.mortec.com. I believe this is the website Jake is talking about. There is a lot of good information there. There are even illustrations of where to look for certain numbers.
